Historical Glimpse

Community pride, perseverance and a vision for future generations are three strong characteristics that are cornerstone to past, present and future development in Grenfell, Saskatchewan.

The CPR main line reached this area in October 1882 and in the following spring shacks and tents sprang up close to the track on the site now known as Grenfell. On April 12, 1894 Grenfell was incorporated as a Village, and by 1909 the population of Grenfell grew to 752. Named after Pasco du Pre Grenfell, an early shareholder of the railway company, the Village of Grenfell was incorporated as a Town on November 1, 1911.

Today the population of Grenfell stands around 1100 and is far from suffering the decline that has been the fate of many small Saskatchewan settlements. Situated alongside the Trans Canada Highway #1 Grenfell has remained a prosperous distribution and service center for the agricultural industry and home to a broad spectrum of related services. From the early settlement days to the present, Grenfell has continued to offer a great number of the services found in much larger centers, with the added bonus of warm hospitality and friendliness.
